Verizon FiOS Internet Service

Q. What is Verizon FiOS Internet service?

A. FiOS Internet travels over the Verizon fiber optic network. Connection speeds reach up to 50 Mbps (in some areas) or 30 Mbps downstream and 25 Mbps or 15 Mbps upstream. Of course, like most broadband service, FiOS Internet connection speeds vary depending on wire condition, PC configuration, network volume and status of the web servers and routers you access while surfing. It is best to hard-wire your connection for optimum upstream speeds.

Q. What is the difference between connection speed and throughput speed?

A. Connection speed is the rate at which data is transferred between Verizon Central Office to your PC. Throughput speed is the speed at which data is transferred to and from your computer.

Q. What is the difference between upload/upstream and download/downstream speeds and how is FiOS Internet service making these speeds quicker than ever?

A. Download/downstream is typically referring to the downloading of a variety of different types of media files, including music, pictures, Web pages, etc. that you retrieve from the Internet. To upload a file is to upload a file you have probably saved on your PCs hard drive and uploaded to the Internet. With the FiOS Internet, which is much faster than anything we’ve known, thanks to Verizon’s fiber optic network, the uploading and downloading of files is faster than ever.

Verizon High Speed Internet Service

Q. How is Verizon High Speed Internet different from other cable Internet providers?

A. Our high bandwidth data is powered by broadband technology, traveling over copper lines. Unlike most cable companies, your connection with Verizon is dedicated from the Verizon central office.

Q. How many phone lines are required to receive Verizon High Speed Internet?

A. You need only one phone line for your Verizon High Speed Internet to work. You can use your existing phone line if you have one. If you do not, all you need is a line installed for dial tone. You can use this line for your telephone, fax and Internet! And yes, you can talk on the phone and surf the Internet at the same time.

Q. I’ve had my same email address for 9 years. Can I keep it with Verizon High Speed Internet?

A. Yes! You can keep most email accounts today with Verizon. None of your Hotmail, MSN, or other popular email providers will have to change.

Q. What is TrueSwitch?

A. You get a free subscription to TrueSwitch when you sign up with Verizon Online. This is software whose main function is to forward emails from your old email account to your new email account for up to 30 days. You should also be able to have your address book and old emails copied over with TrueSwitch*. TrueSwitch also sends a message to your contacts notifying them of your new email addresses.

Q. Can I select a new online provider?

A. Yes. This occurs during the installation process. Of course, you do not have to do this. You can opt to use Verizon’s Personalized Start Page as your Internet gateway.

Verizon FiOS TV

Q. What is Verizon FiOS TV?

A. Verizon FiOS TV offers an ultra-clear picture, thanks to the fiber optic network, transmitting signals directly to your house. With FiOS TV, you can get more than 200 digital channels and over 20 local & national HDTV channels, with dual-tuner Digital Video Recorders and access to over 10,000 On Demand titles per month (and growing).

Q. Where are my favorite channels?

A. Go to Favorites (FAV) on your remote control. You can retrieve all your past programmed favorite channels there, at the Interactive Media Guide (IMG). It is very user-friendly. Soon you will be able to program new favorites along with your old favorites, among others!

Q. How is Verizon FiOS TV different than cable TV?

A. Conventional cable relies on coaxial cable which suffers from, among other things, performance degradation on shared networks. The Verizon FiOS network provides enormous bandwidth, which will allow greater access to even more channels, more HD broadcasts, and more On Demand titles.

Q. How is FiOS different than satellite television?

A. Unlike the Verizon fiber optics network that brings Verizon signals right to your home on one fiber, satellite television reception is picked up through a clear line of sight between the Dish that is installed on your home and the southern sky.
